Alice “Evonne” Babbitt was born August 9, 1931 to Benjamin and Grace (Murgatroyd) Ferguson in Lincoln, Nebraska. She grew up with her older sister Mary Lou Wegener on the family acreage. Growing up she loved music. She loved to sing and was involved in school plays and choral groups. Most famously she starred in “Annie, Get Your Gun” during her second year of high school.

After high school Evonne attended secretarial school. During this time she worked at an ice cream store. She always said she could eat more ice cream than anyone; she could sit and eat a quart by herself. It was not until after the Korean War, that she married Frank Emmet Babbitt. To this union four children were born: Jeri, Mark, Lori, and Patti. They traveled around the country as a military family, until they finally settled in Columbus Junction, Iowa.

Evonne was involved in the community in Columbus Junction as her children grew up. She was a Cub Scout leader and part of the various women’s groups around town. Once the children grew up and she went back to work. She worked as a secretary, a plastics engineer, and slew of other jobs.

Evonne was a smart person, and she always entertained her mind with puzzles, crosswords, and games. She enjoyed coming together for games. It gave her time be with her family and friends and she cherished these moments.

Evonne and Frank moved to Norwalk in 1974. She worked for the Small Business Administration before retiring in 1993. After retirement she helped take care of her granddaughter, Sara. She later joined the Norwalk Christian Church in 2004 and was active in her membership.

Alice Evonne Babbitt, age 86, of Norwalk, entered into rest on December 6, 2017.
