Ethel’s family moved from Canada to Wall Lake, Iowa when she was 10 years old, where she graduated from Wall Lake High School.

Ethel graduated from Waldorf College of Nursing at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.  She then served her country honorably as a nurse in the United States Army during World War II.  She married the love of her life, Howard Hughes on November 16, 1946 in Wall Lake, Iowa.  To this union they had four children, Jane, Sally, Tom and John.  Together they made their home in Norwalk where Howard farmed.

Ethel and Howard were members of the Norwalk United Methodist Church.  Ethel was also a member of the American Legion and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Ethel continued to live in her home until recently when she moved to Wesley Acres in Des Moines, Iowa.  On Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 23, 2017, Ethel passed away peacefully.  She lived 95 years, 8 months and 3 days.  She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Howard in 2012.

Ethel is survived by her four children, Jane Walker of Norwalk, Sally Hollander of Trophy Club, TX, Tom Hughes of Norwalk, and John Hughes of Norwalk; six grandchildren, Jeff, Brian Matt, Chris, Josh, and Stephanie; and five great-grandchildren.
