Marvel Marlene (Cameron) Griffey, was born November 7, 1934 to Paul and Myrtle (Bancroft) Cameron in Scranton, Iowa. She grew up on a farm in the Scranton area until 1951, when the family moved to Warren County, where she has been a resident all her life. They raised sheep, hogs, cattle, chicken, rabbits, and a pair of horses on their farm. She played softball with her 4H team in the pasture and her dad was the coach. She graduated from Indianola High School in 1952.

In the Fall of 1952, she married her high school sweetheart Allen Dean Spence. To this union three children were born; Candy, Debbie, and Brad. In January of 1967, she married Tommy Joe Griffey and to this union two children were born; Frank and Jerry.

Along with raising five kids she worked as a beautician, a cook at Regency Care Center, and then retired from a job at the US Postal Service in November 1996. For the first eight years after her retirement she and Tommy enjoyed wintering in California with the in-laws to get away from the cold.

Marvel was passionate about the outdoors. At home she had a large garden and a bazillion bird feeders.

However, she didn’t keep her love of the outdoors contained at home. This passion led her and Tom to volunteer as campground hosts at Walnut Woods State Park. They served in that capacity for so long they received a plaque recognizing them as the state’s longest serving host and hostess. Since that didn’t keep them busy enough she volunteered to mow the grounds, on her own up to 40 hours a week, while Tommy would chop wood or take care of the campers needs. She continued mowing until she was 78 years old and was no longer serving as a hostess.

She loved her family deeply. She was always excited to plan the next holiday or family event. She was involved with her children and grandchildren’s lives by knitting or crocheting blankets for them at birth and when they graduated school. She also loved being entertained by her great grandchildren; they kept her young.

Marvel Griffey, age 82, of Norwalk entered into rest on Thursday, November 2nd at Taylor House Hospice.

Marvel is preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Griffey; her sister Janice Brick; and brother-in-law Charlie Brick.

Marvel is survived by her children, Candy (Wayne) Parker, Deb (Bob) Elgin, Brad Griffey, Frank Griffey, and Jerry Griffey; six grandchildren, Lindsey, Adam, Wade, Natasha, Samantha, Justin; 17 great grandchildren; and her siblings Madalene and LaVerne.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the family will be accepted.
