Caroline Ruth (Munyon) Stover Darlington

October 15, 1918 ~ March 7, 2018 (age 99)

Caroline Stover Darlington, age 99, of Norwalk (formerly a past resident of Des Moines, Montezuma, and Grinnell) died peacefully Wednesday morning, March 7, 2018 at Norwalk Nursing and Rehabilitation where she's resided these past few years.

Caroline is the mother of Charlie (Becky) Stover of Norwalk and the late Roger (Rebecca) Stover.

A visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 13th at O'Leary Funeral Services in Norwalk.  A luncheon will immediately follow services with burial taking place in the Alice Cemetery in Grundy County, Iowa that afternoon.

Caroline's Life Story

Caroline Ruth was born on October 15, 1918 in Oskaloosa, Iowa to Byron and Ruth Ann (Hammer) Munyon. She graduated from Lincoln High school in Des Moines, Iowa in 1936.

Caroline worked as an executive secretary for a number of notable companies in downtown Des Moines: Solar Aircraft, Iowa Boy Scouts, State of Iowa, and Storey-Kenworthy. It was said that she could accurately type 100 wpm on a manual typewriter. Caroline also taught Sunday School for 40 years in the United Methodist Church.  She was actively involved with PEO and Eastern Star.

She met her first husband, Verlon Stover, just a few blocks from the Fort Des Moines Army base where he worked as a welder and mechanic.  They married on September 20, 1937 in Des Moines, Iowa. Their first son, Charles, was born in 1938. Their second son, Roger, was born in 1942. They were married for 38 years until Verlon preceded her in death on December 25, 1975.

On October 16, 1978, Caroline married the Reverend John Darlington of the Montezuma United Methodist Church in Montezuma, Iowa. Caroline actively served alongside the Reverend John Darlington at the Montezuma United Methodist Church until he retired from the pastorate. After retirement, they lived in Grinnell, Iowa at the Mayflower Retirement Village. They were married for 27 years until John preceded her in death on March 6, 2005.

Caroline was preceded in death by her parents, Byron and Ruth Ann Munyon; three brothers, Dean, Elvin, & Daniel Munyon; her two husbands, Verlon Stover & John Darlington, one son, Roger Stover on November 24, 2012; and a great-granddaughter, Chloe Paige Stover on December 26, 2009.

Caroline is survived by her children Charles (Sharon “Becky”) Stover, daughter-in-law Rebecca Jane Stover, Cathy (Steve) Cate, Judy (Jack) Gilmore, John (Julie) Darlington; 10 grandchildren, Lynn (Dan) McCool, Verlon (Julie) Stover, Hollee Stover-Milligan, Byron (Katie) Stover, Laura Stover, Deena Stover-McCoy, Tyler Cate, James (Alison) Cate, Leah Gilmore, and Annie Darlington; 18 great-grandchildren, Chase (Lauren) McCool, Logan (Brigitte) McCool, Erin (David) Englert, Amber (Job) Akkermann, Charlie (Sharon, “Becky”) Stover, Jessica (H Randall) Pitschmann, Connor Milligan, Jordon Milligan, Claire Milligan, Ethan Milligan, Sophie Milligan, Mason Stover, Shawn McCoy, Ryan McCoy, Nathan McCoy, Jacob (Haley) McCoy, Zachary McCoy; and 9 great-great grandchildren, Lincoln McCool, Minnelle McCool, Sola Grace Akkermann, Harvey Job Akkermann, Wyatt Stover, Walker Stover, Waylon Stover, Huck Pitschmann and Fern Pitschmann.
