Carolyn's Life Story
Carolyn Fae was the eldest of fraternal twin girls, born to Glen and Ethel (Sayers) Wood on July 16, 1922, in Des Moines, Iowa. Carolyn lived on Des Moines’ southside until the age of 12 when her family moved to Norwalk. She graduated from Norwalk High School with the Class of 1940 and was the last living member of her class of 28. Following school, she went to work for Meredith Publishing. During this time, she met Alan Hukle and following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army they married on October 20, 1945. They were blessed with four children, Alan Wallace, Roger, Linda, and Susie.
Carolyn and her husband, Alan (deceased), raised their four kids in a tiny Lustron enameled steel house. The two girls shared one bedroom and the two boys took the other, leaving ONLY the living room pull-out couch for her and Alan to sleep every night. She lived there by herself, until about 2-3 years ago, when a couple of medical “issues” following her husband’s death, ended her driving and even stopped her from working out at Aspen Fitness Center. She then moved to a Norwalk assisted living facility.
In the early years, she was ALWAYS active in the community and with school activities, serving on the PTA, as a Home Room Mother, with Sweet Adelines, etc. She was a beloved member of the Norwalk Christian Church. She was proudly the oldest member, beloved of all ages. She joined the church choir at age 12 and sang for 83 years. She attended worship every Sunday, by way of the carpool shuttle service the Church has organized. She also served as elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher and youth director, and loved her Coffee Fellowship and 30&1 game night groups.
One of her most interesting attributes for MANY years was instructing thousands of young women in the art of self-defense, both through public speaking and visible demonstrations throughout Iowa and surrounding states. Her program was called, “Lady Stay Alive” and she was named an Honorary Member of the Iowa State Patrol for her undying efforts and years of dedication to the cause. Even at 97, she could still bring a grown man to his knees! LOL! One of her many news articles featured her “Putting the hurt” on Senator Grassley BEFORE he was ever a Senator!
She was like the little Energizer Bunny and just kept coming back. The main reason that kept her thriving was her 100% positive attitude! NO matter how her day was going, or what may have been troubling her, WHENEVER someone asked how she was doing, she ALWAYS responded: “I’m GOOD!” She even coined an acronym APE, Attitude, Portion Control and Exercise and wore a sweatshirt often to announce it to the world!
At the care center, Edencrest, every resident knew they had a caring resident nearby whom which they can visit and know someone really cares! She always kept them laughing and loved to play the piano in the Foyer for their (and her) enjoyment. The ironical thing is she played strictly “by ear” and had NO training on the keyboard! She also had the uncanny ability to create a poem out of any subject matter on cue! She performed her most recent poem at church just three weeks ago, roasting “Mayor” Doug Pierce.
Carolyn is survived by her four children, Alan “Rocky” (Susan) Hukle of Davis, IL, Roger (Connie) Hukle of Colorado Springs, CO, Linda (Bill) Connell of New Virginia and Susie (Mike) Rynearson of Nowalk; five grandchildren, Brian, Tom, Alysa, Stefani and Jeff; eight great grandchildren, Austin, Garrett, Rachel, Briley, Corbin, Elizabeth, Ava and Fern; and a host of other family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Eileen Flynn and Marilyn Bishop; and a brother, Wallace Wood.
