Cherie (Rumbeck) McFarland

August 5, 1936 ~ February 21, 2018 (age 81)

Cherie Lou (Rumbeck) McFarland, age 81, died peacefully on February 21, 2018 at Taylor House Hospice, after battling cancer for eight years.

A visitation will be held on Friday, March 2nd, at O’Leary Funeral Services from 5 to 7 p.m.   A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 3rd at the Stanley Cemetery, Amherst, Nebraska.  Following the graveside service there will be a luncheon at the Amerhest City Hall.

Cherie's Life Story

Cherie Lou Rumbeck was born on August 5, 1936 on a farm in Buffalo County, Nebraska to Raymond and Mary (Harmony) Rumbeck.  She graduated from Amherst High School with the class of 1953.  Cherie then attended Nebraska State Teacher College at Kearney, Nebraska.

 In 1958 she married James Joseph McFarland of Sumner, Nebraska at the Methodist Church in Amherst.  They had four children, Kim, Michael, Thomas, and Patrick.  Cherie taught pre-school at Lexington, Axtell and Callaway, in Nebraska.

 Cherie and Joe made their home in Callaway, North Platte and Cozad where Joe was teaching.  They moved to Ida Grove, Iowa in 1968, and then moved to Osceola for five years.  In 1974, they moved their family to Norwalk, Iowa.


Cherie started a preschool at New Life Lutheran Church and continued to run the school for twenty-five years, retiring in 1992.   She had a special way of working with preschoolers and enjoyed the day to day activities and special programs with them.


She was a member of the Lion’s Club and the RAGBRAI Committee preparing for Norwalk hosting the RAGBRAI route.    Cherie loved decorating for every season and holiday, and  she enjoyed crafts and sewing.    She loved attending her children and grandchildren’s sporting events.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               

 During the last few years, she was especially active in her church where she and Joe led and participated in Sunday school.

 Cherie will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Joe; her children Kim (Dave) Butler of Indianola, Michael (Penny) of Azel, Texas, Thomas (Rhonda) Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Patrick (LeAnn) of New Virginia; grandchildren Aron, Dan, Andrew, Tim, Cole, Tyler, Shawn, and Garrett; great grandchildren Zelda, Isaac, Sammy and Juliet; siblings Claudia Bowers, JoAn Todd, Edward Rumbeck, Jean Albright, Jane Ripp, Patty Schake.

 She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Gerald and Vaughn.
