David's Life Story
David Patrick Spieker was born December 31, 1949 in Des Moines to Harry and Catherine (Myers) Spieker. He was the youngest of 4 children.
David lived near Easter Lake in Des Moines with his family until he moved to Norwalk at the age of 10. David attended Norwalk schools and graduated with the class of 1968. On September 27, 1969 he married Diana Essick at the Norwalk United Methodist Church, with both a minister and priest officiating. David and Diana were blessed with three children, Angie, Mike and Chad.
David worked for the railroad and was a member of the Laborers Local Union 177 in Des Moines. For over 23 years, he worked for Dr. Alan Raun as the horse stallion manager. David loved his farm and horses, especially his horse, Harley. He bred and raised quarter horses at his farm in Norwalk and raced at Prairie Meadows. In 2016 Dave and Diana were inducted into the Iowa Quarter Horse Racing Hall of Fame. He was a member of both the American Quarter Horse Association and Iowa Quarter Horse Racing Association. He served many terms on the Iowa Quarter Horse Racing Board of Directors. When he wasn’t working with horses, David enjoyed hunting, fishing and Nascar racing. In recent years, he enjoyed woodworking with wood he sawmilled off of the farm and camping with the Happy Campers.
David will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Diana, his daughter Angie Engle (Barry), sons Mike (Bobbi) and Chad (Leslie); his grandchildren Peyton, Karin, Dillon, Kiley and Brooke; his sister Mary Ellen (Dick) Hamilton, brother Tom Spieker, many nieces, nephews and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Michael.
The family would like to thank all the family and friends that surrounded him with their love and support during this past week. David was blessed to have each of you in his life.
