Joseph Hill was born March 14, 1946, to Lowell and Bernice (Wilbois) Hill. He grew up in Des Moines with his four siblings. The kids were ornery and ran the neighborhood. In high school Joe played baseball at East High and considered himself quite good. He also worked in the quarry with his dad Lowell.

Throughout his life he worked with his hands. He loved working with his big machines, doing construction, and carpentry. He would maintain his grandparents’ house, build wooden shoes jewelry boxes and other keepsakes and toys for his children.

Joe considered himself a Clint Eastwood doppelganger and was a man of the land. He loved being outdoors caring for his farm. He loved visiting the mountains in Montana and fishing. He would watch the stars searching for alien life and admiring the vast night sky. He was a lifelong learner who enjoyed reading and absorbing as much information as he could.

He was a proud grandfather who enjoyed teaching his grandchildren life lessons as he saw fit, such as poker, and watching their activities and achievements. He thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren’s visits to the farm. He thought he was really funny and at one time tried to give away his grandchildren.

Joe passed away May 16, 2017 at his home in Lacona.

He is survived by his wife Patti Hill, his daughters Amber (Dave) Lane and Andrea (Rusty) Brookes, his son Jason (Susan) Atkinson; his grandchildren Cameron, Vanessa, Keenan, Ryle, Emily, Santiago, Ruby, Jacy, Bela, Rowan, Heather, Reese, Ruby; one great grandchild Thomas; his siblings John Hill, Judy (Larry) Ingersoll, and Danny Hill; his step-mother Shirley Hill; nephews Jared Hill, Mike Fick; and niece Laura Hill.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother Jim and wife Sue Hill; his grandson Joseph Atkinson; and his nephew Mike Ingersoll.

A memorial gathering is planned Sunday, May 28, from 1-3 PM at O'Leary Celebration of Life Center in Norwalk, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be addressed to the family. To leave a condolence for Joe and his family or to order flowers click the link below or call (515)-981-0700.
