Karen's Life Story
Karen Jo Widen, 64, of Des Moines went to be with the Lord peacefully Friday afternoon January 4, 2018 at Unity Point Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines shortly after being diagnosed with brain cancer. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 12, 2019 at O’Leary Funeral home in Norwalk, IA with visitation starting at 4:00 p.m.
Karen was born July 27, 1954 in Perry, IA to Edwin and Mary Widen. She was born in Perry but spent much of her life on the southside of Des Moines, Iowa. She started her career in Accounting at Means Services, Inc. in Des Moines in the 70’s. After several years, she moved onto Des Moines University where she grew into a department manager. She moved on from there to Wright Tree Service where she retired after 14 years in 2015.
In January 2018 she was diagnosed with Stage 3 small cell lung cancer. She fought the fight and went into remission August 2018. During her treatments, she sometimes had to rely on the American Cancer Society for rides to and from treatments. That was a huge blessing for her. When she was in remission, she paid it forward and began to volunteer to give rides to those in need. That’s who Karen was, unselfish maybe prideful but a very loving woman to all. Karen had a love for life, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends especially her 3 grandchildren. Her hobbies included gardening, fishing and scrapbooking. She would never miss a sporting game, music program or band concert from any of her grandkids. Her son Jamie was her world. She is a beautiful woman inside and out and will be missed dearly!
Karen is survived by her son, Jamie (Rebecca) Widen; grand-children, Jordan Parsons, Tanner Widen, and Abigail Widen; siblings, Linda Smith, Mindy (Harold) Perreault, Vince Ratliff, Rick (Nancy), Larry (Cathy), and Mark Hacker; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ed Widen & Mary Pyle; her sisters, Cathy Garcia and Donna Widen; and nephew, Shane Mussgrove.
