Lorraine's Life Story

Lorraine Dorothy, the daughter of Porter and Ora (Holland) Borwick was born on December 8, 1926 in Story City, IA.  She grew-up in rural Roland, IA where her parents farmed.  She graduated from Roland High School in 1944

Lorraine worked as a bookkeeper in downtown Des Moines and was introduced to her soon-to-be husband, Iral Lee Hoops of Somerset, IA. To this union they had two boys and a girl Scott, Douglas, and Jeri.  They made their home on the southside of Des Moines.  Lorraine worked as a homemaker raising her children until the sudden and unexpected death of her husband in March 1961.  She went to work for the Des Moines Public School System as a cook.  In the early 1970’s, she began working at Des Moines Savings and Loan as the Director of the Statesman Club.  This job offered many opportunities to travel to such destinations as Norway, Alaska, Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Washington D.C.  After her retirement in 1991, Lorraine enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren, visiting neighbors, cooking, and baking.  She was a long-time member of the Park Avenue Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her daughter Jeri Paca (husband, Tom) of Norwalk; a sister Beverly Weltha (husband, Duane) of Cedar Rapids, IA; three granddaughters Mindy Denning of Stockton, MO, Jaime Paca of Norwalk and Emily Paca Henricksen (husband, Jason) of St. Louis Park, MN; her four great-grandchildren whom she loved, Frank, Chelsea, Billy, and new born baby-boy Sidney; and a former daughter-in-law, Jane Sukup of Springfield, MO.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Iral Lee Hoops in March 1961; a son, Scott Hoops in 1995; and an infant son, Douglas in 1953.
