Michael John Edward Fries, age 54, of Norwalk died Sunday morning, September 15, 2019 at Mercy One Medical Center in Des Moines.
Michael's Life Story
Michael John Edward Fries, the second of four sons born to Larry and Trudy (Warner) Fries was born September 23, 1964, in Nürnberg, Germany; while his father was stationed in the U.S. Army. Michael’s family settled in Overland Park, Kansas, where he attended school and graduated Shawnee Mission West Highschool in 1982. In school he was very active in sports. He played football, baseball and especially enjoyed wrestling. He attended Johnson County Community College on a Wrestling Scholarship. Michael moved to Memphis, Tennessee where he met the love of his life, Marlene Sigler. They were engaged following their short courtship and were married August 29, 1987 in Memphis. To this union three children were born Nicholas, Matthew, and Katie. Michael worked as a Fingerprint Examiner for the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department in Memphis, and in 1995 Michael and Marlene moved their family to Norwalk, Iowa, where he worked for the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations.
Michael is a member of Fellowship Community Church in Norwalk; where he enjoyed participating in services, church activities and fellowship. He loved watching sports, and his goal was to attend every ballpark in the U.S.; due to his health he only had the opportunity to visit about 12 ballparks. Michael and Marlene enjoyed traveling, and one of their most recent trips was a riverboat cruise celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary where he was able to visit the city of his birth, Nürnberg, Germany.
On the Lord's Day, Sunday morning September 15, 2019 Michael entered God’s Hands after many years of failing health. He lived just shy of his 55th birthday, which he would have celebrated this next week, attaining the age of 54 years, 11 months, and 22 days. He was preceded in death by father and mother-in-law, Howard and Nancy Sigler; a niece Morgan; and his beloved Boston Terrier, Elvis in 2018
He is loving survived by his wife Marlene; two sons, Nick (wife, Colly) and their newborn son, Nathaniel of Brooklyn Center, MN and Matthew of Norwalk; a daughter, Katie Fries of Pleasant Hill; his parents, Larry and Trudy of Overland Park; his brother, Shane of Shawnee, KS, Martin (Sharon) of Olathe, KS, and Christopher of Overland Park; his brother-in-laws, Allan (Vega), Roger (Debbie), Chuck (Jennifer), Mark (Emily); a sister-in-law, Jennifer (Andrew); three dogs Presley, Graceland, Valentino; and a host of family and friends.
