Paul Eric, the son of Thomas Ernest Dierks and Audrey Josephine Criswell was born on January 20, 1967 in Springfield, IL. Eric was the youngest of four children. Early years were spent in Tallula, Illinois. From Tallula the family relocated to Lakewood, Iowa (now part of Norwalk, Iowa). He attended both Norwalk and Indianola school systems.
After finishing high school, Eric worked at Interstate Auto in Waukee. Around this time, Eric met Jennifer Marsh on the south side of Des Moines. The couple shared a daughter Katie Marsh, whom Eric raised as his own.
Eric then opened his own business called Dierks’ Auto Body, working in the same building for about 5 years. After closing his business, Eric took care of the family farm for his dad. He was a mechanic, taking care of his dad's equipment, planted and harvested crops and maintained the yards and buildings.
In 2017 Eric started working full time for Cappel’s Ace Hardware in Norwalk and West Des Moines. Eric enjoyed doing small engine repair and had a loyal customer following.
Eric was a classic car enthusiast, especially Volkswagen Beetles. He enjoyed restoring these cars himself putting them back into their original condition. He had a passion for fishing and mushroom hunting. He enjoyed his dogs and cats.
One of the best stories shared by Eric is the day he and his Father Thomas decided to canoe around their pond spraying blue dye to kill algae. In the process the wind was blowing with the result being that both men resembled “Smurfs” at the end of the process. Rumor has it the dye stayed on their skin about three days.
Eric passed away unexpectedly at his home in Des Moines on Thursday, May 23rd. He was 52 years old.
He is survived by his daughter, Katie Marsh (Jon Stonehocker), his mother, Audrey Criswell; and siblings Tony Dierks, Cheryl Lewis, Ryan Dierks, and Jenni (Jake) Johnston; a step-mother, Linda Dierks and her children, Steve, Lori, and Marcus; several nieces and nephews; his faithful companion, Tigger, a ChiYorkie; and his small grand dog, Ollie Stonehocker. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Dierks in November 7, 2018; and a brother-in-law, Tim Lewis.
