Obituary

 

Derek DeWayne Cozad, the son of Charles DeWayne and Sheryl Sue (Woodard) Cozad was born on November 13, 1959, in Des Moines, Iowa.  He was raised in Norwalk with his five siblings, Craig, Brian, Diane, Charles, and Linda and graduated from Norwalk High School with the Class of 1978.  While in school he met the love of his life, Sheryl Ruth Kuiper.  They were married on April 19, 1980, at the First Church of the Nazarene in Des Moines.  To this union they were blessed with three children, Crissy, Danielle, and Tim.

Derek and Sherry made their home in Norwalk.  He worked for many years in the lawn care business; several of those years for ChemLawn.  His interest included sprint cars, playing games, fantasy football and taking road trips with his wife to Christian Music Concerts and to various states such as Texas and South Carolina to visit family.  Derek was also an avid Iowa Hawkeye, Iowa State Cyclones and Pittsburgh Steelers football fan.

On Wednesday morning, September 1, 2021, Derek died at his home following a long battle with renal cancer.  He lived 61 years, 9 months, and 18 days.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Derek is survived by his wife Sherry; children, Crissy Cozad (Josh McCoy) of Des Moines, and Danielle (Kelly) Dinville of West Des Moines, and Tim Cozad of Greenville, SC; his siblings, Craig (Rhonda) Cozad, Brian Cozad, Diane (Brian) Hokanson, Chuck Cozad (Tom Taylor) and Linda (Daniel) Lawton; three grandchildren, Landen, Nile and Bryar; and a host of nieces and nephews.
