Derick's Life Story
Derick Ross Elings, 28 years old, died unexpectedly Friday morning, June 5, 2020, at his residence in Indianola.
Derick, youngest child born to Donald Ray and Renee Dawn (Carlson) Elings, was born October 2, 1991 at Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. The first few years of Derick’s life were spent near Union Park in Des Moines, befriending many neighbors, young and old. His father, Don, died on January 20, 1996 due to complications from cancer, and shortly after the Elings Family moved to a small acreage south of Norwalk. Derick attended the Norwalk school district, earning his GED in 2010. His later years were spent working as a Foreman overseeing the installation of dry basement systems in Central Iowa.
Derick was mechanically inclined from a very young age, and would often work on his Triumph motorcycle, finding great pleasure riding throughout Iowa’s county roads. He loved his family deeply and relished spending time with them, especially his nieces and nephews. Derick wore his heart on his sleeve, ending nearly every conversation with those he cared for with “I Love You.”
For the last several years, Derick battled with drug addiction, attending Narcotics and Alcoholics Anonymous. He prized his sobriety and personal growth, which included the challenge of chairing some of the meetings. On the morning of Friday, June 5, 2020, Derick died unexpectedly from a presumed accidental drug overdose. He believed in people’s capacity for kindness, and the importance of second chances. Derick’s love for life, upbeat personality, quick wit, and infectious laugh will be greatly missed.
Those left to celebrate and cherish Derick’s life are his mother, Renee, three siblings: Diane Elings, Darcy Garcia (Noel Spencer-Motyko) and Darren Elings (Paige Meyer), his five nieces and three nephews: Danielle, Dakota, Dahlia, Benicio, Lilly, Lola, Luka, and Alana, as well as many beloved family and friends.
