Gladys Dixon’s Life Story
Gladys (Toyne) Dixon was born on January 5, 1937 to Glen & Lillian (Snell) Toyne in Ogden, Iowa. Gladys graduated from Boxholm High School and then attended Westmar College in LeMars.
One night in 1965, out in Hamilton County, Gladys went on a blind date that was arranged through mutual acquaintances. This blind date led her to the love of her life, Jimmy D. Dixon. Gladys & Jimmy dated for three years before tying the knot in Boxholm on November 30, 1968, the wedding anniversary of Gladys’ parents, because Gladys & Jimmy could not wait to get married on Groundhog’s day of the following year, which is the traditional wedding date for the Dixon family. After marriage, Gladys & Jimmy lived on a farm in Davis County where they brought their only son Dan into this world in 1971. Shortly after, they moved to Illinois for three years and in 1979 they finally made a home in Norwalk.
Gladys worked as a Secretary for the State of Iowa in the Department of Education, the Department of the Blind and eventually retired from the Iowa Department of Elder Affairs (now known as the Iowa Department on Aging) in 2001.
Gladys enjoyed using her talents in creative writing & journalism through writing newspaper articles & poetry throughout her life, including being the Editor of the Iowa Christmas Tree Association Newsletter. Along side creative writing, Gladys also expressed herself by painting watercolor pictures.
Gladys peacefully passed away on December 28, 2020 at The Village in Indianola. She is preceded in death by her parents Glen & Lillian, and her brothers Duane & Verle.
Gladys will forever be remembered in the hearts of her husband Jim, son Dan (Chris) Dixon, and grandsons Braydyn Dixon & Hunter Dixon, all from Norwalk.
A Celebration of Life service will take place at a later date.
