Joan Marie Harkin, age 79, of Cumming died Saturday, April 3, 2021 of a stroke in Johnston.
A public viewing will be held on Thursday, April 8 at 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM at O'Leary Celebration of Life Center in Norwalk.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 9 at 9:30 AM at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Norwalk. Burial will immediately follow at the St. John Cemetery, north of Cumming, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, Martin, who passed away in November 2016.

COVID-19 Note: The family has requested that everyone attending is required to wear a face mask and maintain social distancing between households. Face mask will be provided for those that do not have one. It has been further requested that there is to be no congregational singing and that those participating in the Mass (i.e. song leaders, cantor, etc.) stationed at the altar are to be the only singers.
David Harkin and his Family is requesting that no money, gifts or flowers be sent for the visitation and service; instead please honor their mother by showing an act of kindness to someone in need of a helping hand or a friendly visit. (Flowers or gifts that are received at either the funeral home or church will not be displayed and will immediately be taken to one of the local nursing care facilities in the area)
Per David Harkin's request, we are requiring the use of face mask at both the funeral home and church. Face mask will be provided for those that do not have one. Also he is requesting that no one sing, with the exception of the song leaders/cantors and those participating in the Mass stationed on the alter. This is for the safety of everyone in attendance due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
Joan was born in Des Moines on June 5th, 1941, to John and Margaret Weil. She had one sister, Marlene (Weil) Kean.
Joan was married to Martin Harkin for 50 years and together they raised two sons, Michael & David.
Joan worked at Principal as an underwriter before taking on the role of a full-time mom. Later in her life, she was the caregiver to her aging parents for many years. Joan was a devoted Catholic and made many friends via the church.
She is survived by her sons Michael and David (Jenifer), and her granddaughters Emily and Elizabeth. David's girls are who she was most proud of.
Joan is preceded in death by her parents, John and Margaret, and her husband, Martin.
She will be missed!
