John Richard Kean, age 90 of Cumming, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 15, 2021, at home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, November 19th at 10:30 am at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Norwalk, Iowa, with a visitation from 4:00-6:30 pm on Thursday, November 18 at the church and a Rosary at 6:30 pm.
John was born April 15, 1931, in Des Moines to Donald and Helen Kean. John was a graduate of Norwalk High School and farmed with his dad after graduation. He married Marlene (Weil) Kean on June 27, 1959. They celebrated 62 years of marriage this past June (2021). John served in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954, Army 88th M.P., 10th Corp, Korea. He celebrated his 21st birthday in North Korea. He was a dedicated, lifetime member of the American Legion, Post 562, Cumming, Iowa.
After his military service ended in 1954 with an honorable discharge, he came back to Cumming to continue farming with his dad. Years later his two sons continued the tradition and farmed along with him. He served as a 4-H leader and was a member of the Angus Association and Warren County Cattlemen’s Association. In 2012 he semi-retired at the age of 81 but was able to give good farming advice to his sons and enjoyed driving around the countryside with his kids, looking at the crops. He enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers. His favorite was watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and was able to watch them win on November 13th.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Suzanne and his two sisters, Patricia (Clair) Dickey and Kathleen (John) Maher.
John is survived by his wife, Marlene; his children, Joe Kean, Diane Turner, Barbara Kean, Jim Kean, and Jeanette (Shaun) Watson; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Justin (Erin) and their children, Grady, Jada and Cora, Jacob, Heidi (Jake) and daughter Margot, Holly (Artie), Camden and Brayden.
