Jonathan's Life Story
Jonathan "Jon" Earl Matherly, the son of Charles Eugene Matherly and Cynthia Diane (Evans) Matherly was born on June 12, 1981 in Indio, California.
Jon moved to Texas, Colorado, then Iowa following graduation from Monument High School in Twentynine Palms, California in 2000 and earned a technical degree in the field of electricity. For these past few years he worked as an electrician for The Waldinger Corporation working primarily commercial properties.
Jon met Jenny Marie Park Brockman in 2009 while they both worked for Sears Auto Center. He was picking up tires from the Sears Southridge location where Jenny worked to take them to the Sears Merle Hay location where he worked. A couple of years later in 2011 they started to date and within a year Jon and Jenny moved in together; a while after that they purchased a home on Des Moines' southside. They made their home there along with Jenny's son, Tripp; whom Jon loved very much and more or less raised him as his own in addition to his four children; Gamerin, Jai, Liam and Rowan. On October 13, 2018 Jon and Jenny made their sacred promises to each other at Red Acre Barn in Prole, Iowa; blending their two families.
Jon was an avid outdoors man and loved everything about being outside. He very much liked to travel, camp, fish, bowl, work on cars of every type, and spend quality time with friends and family. He was a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan and recently purchased his first Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He was an exceptional cook where he could conjure up anything. He truly had a passion for cooking, grilling, smoking, baking, etc. If it existed Jon could recreate it or make something completely from scratch. He was known to all as being selfless, hard-working, dependable, big-hearted and had the best smile with the most contagious laugh.
Jon unexpectedly passed away on Monday morning, September 6, 2021 at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center in Des Moines. Jon's spirit and zest for life will continue through all the lives he was able to save by his unselfish gift of organ donation; that he was so fiercely passionate about if his body could no longer be Earth side.
Jon is survived by his wife, Jenny of Des Moines; five children, Gamerin (Autumn Richardson) Matherly and Jai Matherly of Colorado Springs, CO, Liam Matherly and Rowan Matherly of Urbandale, IA, and Tripp Palmer of Des Moines, IA; parents, Cynthia Matherly of Toledo, OR and Charles Matherly of Thermal, CA; older brother, Michael Matherly and younger brother, Andrew Matherly of Klamath Falls, OR; maternal grandmother, Deanna Buchanan of Toledo, OR; goddaughter, Cora Streeter of Indianola, IA; friends that have become family, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, William Evans of California; and paternal grandparents, Earl Matherly and Verlie MacDonald of California.
