Obituary

Kae Helen Smoldt, age 58, died Friday, December 10, 2021 at MercyOne Hospice in Johnston.  Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, December 16 with a funeral service starting at 10:30 a.m. on Friday.  Lunch will be served following the funeral.  Visitation and funeral services will be held at O’Leary Celebration of Life Center in Norwalk.

Kae was born November18, 1963 to Edward and Irene (Leffel) Burkart in Wisconsin .  She graduated from high school in Marathon, Wisconsin, received her BA from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and her Master’s in Public Administration from Drake. She began working for Broadlawns as a case manager in 2000 and was promoted to the position of Director of Mental Health at Broadlawns in 2008.  She worked in that position until she retired in 2019.  Kae married Scott Smoldt in 2001 and they and they made their home Urbandale and Johnston, and they recently moved to Norwalk.

Kae is survived by her husband, Scott; her mother, Irene Burkart; her step-children, Aaron (Shelley) Smoldt, Kyle (Rachael) Smoldt, Caitlyn Smoldt and her children Charlotte and Micah; her siblings Kim (Russ) Seubert of Wisconsin, Doug (Marie) Burkart of Mississippi, Linda (Al) Schuck of Minnesota and Leah (Bill) Coersmeyer of Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her father, Edward Burkart.
