Larry’s Life Story
Larry George Gilbert, the fifth of eight children born to Arthur Vernon and Mildred Lucile, was born October 2, 1944 in Mt Ayr, Iowa. At the age of nine he moved with his family to Des Moines’ southside. He attended Lincoln High School and Des Moines Technical Vocational School where he earned his diesel mechanics certification. He graduated with the Class of 1962. He met his future bride-to-be Julia Jean McCauley through his younger sister, Marlene. They fell in love and were married on October 5, 1962 in Marysville, Missouri. Five children, twin boys, Larry and Terry, Allen, James, and Connie blessed this union.
He worked for his dad at Gilbert Construction building fences. When he was 19 he and Julie started their own fencing business as a subcontractor for his dad. They owned and operated Gilbert Fencing which was later renamed United Fence and Gate until his retirement when they sold the business in 2015.
When younger, Larry with his older brother, Duane, enjoyed racing cars in Newton and Knoxville. They would drag-race throughout central Iowa. Larry passed on his love of cars to his children. One of his most memorable moments was on his 60th birthday when he had the opportunity to drive a Chevy Nascar at the Newton Speedway.
Larry enjoyed working on old cars, fixing them up, and reselling to generate additional income. Family get togethers often include sharing their antique cars. He was so passionate about his love of cars that he helped several family members find their dream cars, including his dad's 66 Ford Fairlane, (now Steve's car), Roger's 57 Chevy, and David's 69 Charger.
On Monday evening, May 4, 2020 Larry died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family. He lived 75 years, 7 months, and 2 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Allen in 1994 and James in 2016; a grandson in infancy, Tony in 1999, a granddaughter, Kara Rachel Haegele in 2011, a great-granddaughter in infancy, Ashlynn in 2010; two sisters, Joyce and Barb, and a brother, Roger; and his in-laws, Benny, Alvin, Dick, and Judy.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of nearly 58 years, Julie; Larry (Kimberly) of Pleasant Hill and Terry (Michelle) of Pleasant Hill, Connie (Luke) Scott of Des Moines; a daughter-in-law, Candy Gilbert of Des Moines; his siblings: Sharon Phipps, Duane (Margaret) Gilbert, Marlene McCaulley, sister-in-law, Gerry Gilbert, and Steve (Rose) Gilbert; 21 grandchildren, Krystle, Jonathon (Danielle), Justin (Bree), Michael (Beth), Brad (Erin), Trent, Terry, Heather (Nick), Morgan, Landon, Grace, Gianna, Gavyn, Jason (Rebecca), Cody (Danielle), Sarah (Victoria), Bryce, Aaron, Kaitlyn, and Alysa; 12 great-grandchildren, Brooke, Aubree, Peyton, Oliver, Aria, Lucas, Alyvia, Cora, Adrianna, Addison, Gracelynn, and Axel; and a host of relatives and friends.
