Larry's Life Story
Lawrence "Larry" Matthew Bloes, the son of Greg and Genevieve (Engle) Bloes, was born August 11, 1947 in Sibley, Iowa. Larry grew up in Sibley with his two brothers and sister. At a young age he met Janice "Jan" Marie Reining of Laurens at the Roof Garden in Lake Okoboji. Shortly thereafter he enlisted into the United States Air Force where he served his country honorably during the Vietnam Conflict; during this time he was engaged to Jan in May and were married on August 22, 1966 in Laurens. Together they made their home in Waverly where he was an air traffic controller at the radar site there. While he was deployed to Vietnam; Jan returned to Laurens with their one year old daughter, Lauri. Following Larry's discharge the family moved to Omaha and later to Lakewood [Des Moines area] in 1972 where their second daughter, Jenifer was born. Larry worked in customer service for over 35 years with Dial Finance (Dial Finance, Norwest Financial and then Wells Fargo) retiring in 2002. Larry enjoyed coaching his daughter's softball teams, playing golf, bowling on many leagues, and was an avid fan of the Iowa State Cyclones. Larry and Jan moved to Altoona to be near their daughter, Jenifer and her dental practice in 2007.
Larry and Jan enjoyed traveling; wintering someplace warm (Florida or Arizona depending on who won the decision that year) and spending their summers at home splitting time between Altoona and Clear Lake. They also enjoy cruising and have traveled to places such as eastern and western Caribbean, New England and Hawaii.
Larry passed away with his wife and daughter at his side on Monday morning, September 13, 2021 at UnityPoint Iowa Methodist Medical Center following a short illness. He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Ralph "Bud" and Dorothy (Halder) Reining daughter, Jenifer Bloes Wolfe on June 20, 2020; a sister Peggy Bloes and a brother, Roger Bloes.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jan of Altoona; a daughter Lauri (Matt) Meneough of Norwalk; son-in-law, Pat Wolfe of Altoona; siblings, Connie (Mike) Sweeney Medical Lake, WA, Terry (Marti) Bloes of Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Brandon (Lacee), Blake, Keegan, Kayleigh, Reed, Drew, Alea, Kate, and Jack and great-granddaughter, Zahara.
