Mary Lou's Life Story

Mary Lou was the eldest of fraternal twin girls born to Corvin Francis and Geraldine Violet (Fertig) Ellis on January 27, 1940 in Norwalk, Iowa.  She grew up in Norwalk alongside her six other siblings graduating from Norwalk High School in 1957.  She married David Eugene Enos, Sr. September 14, 1957 at the old Norwalk United Methodist Church.  Together they made their home in Des Moines and later moved to an acreage near Cumming, Iowa.  Mary Lou, an independent woman, worked for over 15 years as a secretary, proofreader and as an ad-tech for Meredith Corporation retiring in 1999.

Mary Lou has many memberships of which included Red Hat Society, PEO, and the Norwalk Christian Church.  She was a volunteer both at Kavanagh House caring for the dying and rocking the newborn babies at Iowa Methodist.  She enjoyed playing spoons with Opie Overholser’s Band; and singing in the Norwalk United Methodist Church Choir.  She and her husband David liked to camp; enjoyed their acreage; and traveled on several trips including Hawaii. Mary Lou was very close to her brothers and sisters attending a lot of family functions and always looked forward to her annual “Sister’s Trip” to such places as Kansas City, Dubuque, Galena, and Chicago.

Mary Lou used to sew, quilt and cross-stitch.  She made graduation quilts for her grandchildren, and a memory quilt out of her husband David’s shirts following his passing.  She also liked puzzles, playing cards and her favorite game of marbles.  Mary Lou enjoyed and loved each of her children, but especially loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She made a tradition of taking each of her grandchildren out for a birthday dinner.

For the past several years Mary Lou and Ken Zanker have enjoyed one another’s company traveling to Arizona and Texas.  Together they enjoyed playing Cribbage and going to the Thirty-Plus-One Club at the Norwalk Christian Church eating dinner and playing games.

She is survived by her three children, Elaine (Frank) Stutsman of Cumming, David, Jr. (Tami) Enos of Ankeny, and Michael (Kathy) Enos of Gainesville, FL; Nine grandchildren, Christina (Mike), Mike, David III (Kelli), Mandi (Ben), Nik (Kelli), Cecilia (Mark),  Samuel, Samantha, and Emily; Twelve great-grandchildren Quinten, Kelly, Harli, Averi, William, Haddi, Knox, Maggi, Charles, Amelia, Maxwell, and Fiona; her siblings, Larry (Daylene) Ellis, Duane Ellis, Donna Sue (Don) Fite, Charlotte (Steve) Schultz, and Deborah Snider.
