Shirley Ann Shepler's Life Story
Shirley Ann Shepler, the daughter and only child of Herbert and Wilma (Kelly) Scott was born on January 27, 1937, in Unionville, Missouri. At a junior in high school her family moved to Norwalk where she graduated from Norwalk High School with the Class of 1955. During her time in school Shirley met the love of her life, Jerry Lee Shepler, and two years later were married on June 16, 1957, at the old Norwalk United Methodist Church. To this union they were blessed with three children, Bradley, Susan, and Scott.
Over the course of the next several years Shirley and Jerry made their home in many locations throughout Iowa including Newton, Sheldon and Urbandale; before returning to Jerry’s parent’s family farm just south of Norwalk.
Shirley was a talented musician playing the piano and teaching lessons. In addition to raising her children she worked as a teacher’s aide at the elementary schools in both Sheldon and Urbandale. Shirley also worked one-day a week as a “Jobber” going from store-to-store sorting magazine racks, making sure periodicals were current on the racks, and replenishing the newsstands. Shirley enjoyed camping with her family during the summers and taking two weeklong camping trips throughout the country. She also enjoyed reading books, especially fiction novels. She and Jerry are members of the Norwalk United Methodist Church.
In 2011 Shirley was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer Disease. Jerry along with their Pomeranian dog, Penny provided comfort and care for Shirley allowing her to live at home until these last two years; where she has resided at Arbor Springs, a dementia community, in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Shirley passed away peacefully Thursday evening, August 5th at Arbor Springs. She lived 84 years, 6 months, and 9 days. She was preceded in death by her parents.
She will be truly missed by her husband of over 64 years, Jerry of Norwalk; her three children, Brad Shepler of West Des Moines, Susan (husband, Eugene) Decker of West Des Moines, and Scott (wife, Sue) Shepler of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; four grandchildren, Ryan (Jaime) Shepler, Hannah (Patrick) Pilkington, Nick (Katie) Wittkop, and Megan Decker; and two-great grandchildren, Ellie Shepler and Jerry Joshua Wittkop.
